Lessons from the redevelopment of George Floyd Square in Minneapolis
How do you transform a busy traffic junction into a place of remembrance without losing its vital transport function? Following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, local residents blocked off a key intersection in Minneapolis in protest. The city council faced a complex challenge: how to accommodate the community’s need for a memorial space while maintaining a crucial transport hub. In this presentation, recorded at our annual ‘Samen Ruimte Maken’ event, Alexander Kado (Project Manager at the City of Minneapolis) shares his practical experiences regarding the redevelopment of George Floyd Square.
