Spatial planning and strategic issues
Using well-considered urbanisation as driver of the mobility transition.
Technical expertise, a strong international network of partners and the political acumen and skills to get solutions in place. That's what we at Goudappel stand for. As Dutch market leader in transport planning, with over 60 years of experience, we translate lessons of the Netherlands into locally fitting solutions. From defining long-term strategies to sustainable urban mobility plans. We inspire and enable, driven by the city or region that you want to be.
Even though every place has its own challenges, they have a few things in common. All over the world, the population in urban areas is growing, causing congestion, unsafety and increasing pressure on liveability in public spaces. Policymakers struggle with developing effective policies that address these challenges, such as stimulating a modal shift to more sustainable transport modes, improving road safety, implementing mobility hubs, and designing attractive streets and squares.
But mobility is never an isolated issue. In the Netherlands, high population density has long required smart and integrated planning approaches, resulting in cities that prioritise active mobility, liveability and road safety. As the country’s first mobility consultancy, Goudappel has been at the forefront of this development from the very beginning.
We approach mobility issues from an integrated, cross-sector and human-oriented perspective, going beyond the traditional thinking on traffic and transport. We use mobility policy as an instrument for achieving broader societal challenges such as climate goals, health, safety, inclusion, and economic vibrant cities and regions.
Parking policy is one of the most powerful instruments for shaping attractive, liveable urban environments. In many towns and city centres, large amounts of valuable public space are still taken up by on-street parking. By actively managing where, how and at what price cars are parked, cities can reclaim this space for people, active mobility, green areas, housing and business.
Combined with mobility hubs and attractive alternatives to private car use, effective parking policy can help reduce car dependency and support a shift towards more sustainable modes of transport. It is therefore not only a mobility measure, but also an important tool for placemaking: helping cities create safer, greener and more attractive places where people want to live, work and spend time.
Rather than simply extrapolating current trends, we start with the future a city or regions wants to create. We then use advanced data, behavioural insights, model scenarios, and innovative software developed in-house to explore different pathways and test which measures can help turn that vision into reality.
This allows us to account for uncertainty and compare the effects of different policy choices. By considering the needs and interests of all stakeholders, we provide robust, forward-looking advice that helps policymakers make informed decisions and adapt their approach where needed.
As experienced mobility experts, we are perfectly positioned to help develop and implement international SUMP projects.
