Innovation

With our roots in the open and innovation-driven Dutch economy, we see innovation not as an option, but as a responsibility. Addressing the challenges cities face worldwide, such as meeting climate targets, improving liveability and road safety, requires new knowledge, reliable data, and smarter tools. That is why we invest at least 5% of our annual turnover in research and innovation.

Innovation

Evidence-based decisions

As the market leader in mobility planning and transport modelling in the Netherlands, we helped shape both the mobility profession and the development of Dutch cities. Today, we build on that experience to support cities and regions worldwide. We know that better decisions start with better evidence. Policy ambitions only become effective when they are underpinned by reliable insights into the impact, trade-offs, and long-term effects of measures.

That is why we develop our own data sources, transport models, and software solutions. These enable us to collect, unlock, analyse, and visualise mobility data in a meaningful way. We use these tools to substantiate our advice and to help policymakers, traffic managers and urban designers make evidence-based choices, both before and after implementation.

Innovative tools for professionals

Innovation is most valuable when it strengthens the capabilities of others. Many of our tools are therefore designed for direct use by clients and partners, enabling them to better understand the consequences of their choices.

Examples include:

  • OmniTRANS Powered by Bentley OpenPaths: the next generation of OmniTRANS, the most widely used transport modelling software in the Netherlands.
  • Quick-scan modelling: providing quick insights into transport flows.
  • Hub Dynamics: simulating large-scale modifications, for example around public transport hubs, to assess their impact on transport flows.

By combining advisory expertise with practical tools, we support organisations in making well-informed decisions.

Connected through innovation networks

Innovation thrives on collaboration. We work closely with locally based partners worldwide, stimulating knowledge exchange and co-creation, both within and beyond projects. This ensures that solutions inspired by Dutch experience are always carefully embedded in local realities.

Within the Dutch Metropolitan Innovations (DMI) ecosystem, we collaborate with governments, knowledge institutions and businesses on new digital tools that support smart sustainable urbanisation and mobility innovation. As part of the Dutch Cycling Embassy network, we contribute to sharing Dutch cycling expertise globally through workshops, training sessions, and international events.

We also actively share knowledge through international conferences and professional networks, including the European Transport Conference, Intertraffic, Velo-city, ITS and POLIS.

Strong academic partnerships

Our close ties with academia are deeply embedded in our organisation. Henk Goudappel, our founder of and pioneer in mobility planning in the Netherlands, maintained strong connections with universities. A tradition we continue today, by offering internships and graduation projects, contributing to research programmes and lectures, and supporting PhD research and academic development. Many of our consultants hold PhDs, ensuring our clients with direct access to the latest scientific insights.

We also contribute to the development of Dutch national guidelines and handbooks, for example through CROW, the Dutch knowledge platform for infrastructure, traffic, and public space. In doing so, we help advance the mobility profession as a whole.

Social responsibility

For us, innovation and knowledge sharing are part of our social responsibility. This also means contributing beyond our core projects. Through our own foundation, Iganga, we support mobility development in countries in the Global South, helping to improve accessibility and safety where resources are limited.
