Transport modelling

verkeersmodel

Effective mobility planning starts with understanding how people and goods move - and how this will change as a result of policies, infrastructure projects, or spatial developments. Transport modelling provides these insights and is therefore essential for policymakers who want to assess the effects of interventions on traffic flow, traffic safety, and liveability before making decisions. As the Dutch market leader in transport modelling, Goudappel helps you transform data into actionable insights.

Making well-founded decisions through multimodal transport insights

Public authorities have many reasons to seek reliable insights into mobility and transport flows. For example, they may need to underpin a mobility plan or long-term strategy, assess the impact of new spatial developments, reduce congestion or improve traffic safety. In Europe, evidence-based decision-making is also an important part of Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning, which involves assessing future scenarios and monitoring and evaluating the effects of measures.

Transport models are a powerful tool for supporting these decisions. How much traffic can a road network accommodate? What happens to traffic flows, accessibility, noise levels, or particulate emissions when a new housing development is built or a new road is constructed? And will a measure to reduce car traffic on one road achieve the desired result, or simply shift traffic to another part of the network?

By providing a multimodal view of transport networks - covering car traffic, public transport, cycling, and walking – transport models allow you to compare scenarios and assess the potential effects of policies, infrastructure measures and spatial developments before implementation. This gives traffic engineers and policymakers a sound evidence base for well-founded decisions.

Advanced tools and proven expertise

With over 60 years of experience, Goudappel builds on a strong Dutch tradition of mobility planning. Our high population density has long required smart, integrated approaches. As a result, transport modelling has become a key instrument for supporting decisions on accessibility, safety and liveability.

Goudappel has been at the forefront of developing these models and applying them in practice. Today, we combine in-depth mobility knowledge with a drive for innovation to create advanced software that supports evidence-based decision-making. We understand which data and indicators are essential for well-informed policy decisions and how to model them with precision. We now apply this proven expertise to support cities and regions worldwide in making reliable mobility decisions.

Over 70% of all Dutch transport models is developed by Goudappel and our OmniTRANS software has been the go-to transport modelling software in the Netherlands for decades. In 2025, we introduced the next generation: OmniTRANS Powered by Bentley OpenPaths – a powerful, flexible, and user-friendly platform that enables users to build, adapt and manage their own transport models with full support from our experts.

Insight into effects on air quality and emissions

In addition to transport models developed in OmniTRANS, we offer OmniTRANS Emissions. This module provides detailed insight into the impact of measures on the environment in terms of emissions of COâ‚‚, particulate matter (PM10) and nitrogen (NOx).

Quick insights into mobility patterns

Sometimes, a full-scale model study is not required - or may be out of reach because of limited resources. To still gain a clear view of mobility patterns, we offer a quick-can tool that delivers quick insights into traffic flows and the potential effects of measures, without the need for your own model.

Model simulations

While strategic transport models predict long-term effects of measures and our model quick scan provides quick overviews, we also offer a solution for those who want to zoom in on specific locations. With our Hub Dynamics simulation model, developed in VISSIM, you can explore how large-scale modifications affects traffic flow at, for example, public transport hubs.

From data to decision

Mobility patterns evolve rapidly – and so do our model techniques. To support data-driven policymaking, we developed a micro modelling technology that captures travel behaviour at individual level. This enables a deeper understanding of how policies affect specific target groups.
